OIL SPILL MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR VADINAR
MARINE NATIONAL PARK-DETECTION / TRACKING/
CLEAN-UP PLAN
INTRODUCTION :
The National Marine Park at Vadinar (Jamnagar) is constantly under the threat
of oil spill. More than 40% (35 to 40 Million Tones per year) of the Petroleum
Crude and Products of requirement of India are unloaded in this area. The
carrying capacity of the area is most over loaded. It is therefore important to
establish an Information Management System to be able to effectively deal the
situations of any oil spill both onshore and offshore which can ultimately
affect the marine environment.
It is proposed to review the existing oil spill monitoring and control system
in the area and establish and information management system for effective
coordination. Since there is a high risk of oil spill in the area and multiple
agencies are involved, it is necessary for early detection and tracking of the
oil spills in order to assist in claims as well as for better preparedness.
SCOPE OF WORK :
- Review of Environmental Risk Assessment Contingency Plan, Clean-up Plan
and detection and tracking system.
- To plan and ask for proportionate financial contribution by the oil
importing industries and Port Authority.
- Preparation of comprehensive oil spill management plan.
following activities are to be carried out
- Survey of the Area and Inventerization of potential sources of the risk.
- Identification and quantification of the sources.
- Review of the existing Emergency Management Plans individually and
comprehensively
- To propose mechanism for oil spill detection, tracking and its spread by
the help of proper Information Management Plan.
- To prepare Oil Spill Management Plan.
Duration of the activity initially would be one year and may
extend as necessary.
