About GEMI
As a result of Industrial Development in the Gujarat State, specifically due to concentration of the Chemical Industries in certain regions, the State Government decided to set up Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) having autonomous status, to provide guidance through the development of technologies for Environmental Management with specific reference to waste minimization / exchange and cleaner technologies of production with a back drop of sustainable development. The Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) has been constituted vide Govt. Resolution No. ENV-1098-1280-P, dated. 1st February, 1999 of Forest & Environment Department Govt. of Gujarat with reference to address of Honorable Governor of Gujarat to the House of State Legislative Assembly on date 19-03-1998 GEMI started functioning on 12-10-2000. GEMI is governed by the Governing Council comprising 15 members as nominated by the State Government in the said G.R., keeping Head Quarter of this Institute at Vadodara. The Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations of GEMI (Constitution) was framed and approved. Based on this GEMI is registered at Vadodara as a society under the Society Registration Act and as a Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act. Progressive deterioration of environment and exhaustion of natural resources viz. air, water & land, are the results of an unplanned approach of the techno-economical growth. In order to ensure that habitats and ecosystems are protected, the nation’s land and water must be sustainable and renewable with pollutant free air to support the quality of life. To promote efficient management of such natural resources and ecosystems, it is imperative that GEMI’s primary role must be focused on vending the state of art technical assistance and information addressing to issues such as improved management practices, advances in basic science, effective planning and coordination, market incentives and public education. GEMI proposes to work in management of environmental problems, to become an alternative leader for sustained ecological growth of the State, GEMI’s organizational structure will be properly engineered so that the natural resources can be effectively conserved and that the water and land can be considered in their original sense of natural resources. The State Environmental Action Program (SEAP) of Gujarat aims at enhancement of the environment management capacity building as a part of overall national objective with focus on ground realities of the state of Gujarat. Keeping in view the issues related to environment
