Regional Environmental Impact Assessment And Environmental Carrying Capacity

Introduction

Since the past few decades, Gujarat has emerged as the favorite destination to set-up industries owing to cheap and uninterrupted availability of water and electricity as well as manpower making it the second most industrialized state in the country. Rapid industrialization in the State has given rise to various environmental issues and thus its study and evaluation became important steps in controlling the problem. Thus GEMI has taken up a unique project known as Regional Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA) and Environmental Carrying Capacity (ECC), which would identify and evaluate the impacts caused due to industrialization (including port activities) and also suggest necessary corrective and preventive measures. The Institute has tied up with Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), Bhuj for this particular study and the seasonal monitoring has been initiated.

Objectives

  • Identify and locate major industrial development zones (including port activities) in the Gulf of Kachchh

  • Prepare a quantitative emission inventory i.e. load based discharge for wastewater, air and hazardous solid waste

  • Prepare a baseline document on concentration of various pollutants, and their dynamics on spatio-temporal scale

  • Documentation of various relevant ecological aspects in the area

      • Mangroves

      • Planktons: Phyto- and Zoo-plankton

      • Fisheries: Species, yield/production, resource dynamics

      • Corals and diatoms

  • Documentation of baseline condition of the regions with respect to

      • Demographic structure

      • Current socio-economic status

      • Trends in resource (coastal and marine) exploitation

      • Projected trends and analysis

  • To assess the extent of development (industrial and urbanization) the region can support based on the load based discharge and pollutant concentration

  • Mapping of various environmental components and preparation of environmental status map for GoK

  • Formulate development plans and aid in policy recommendations

Project Benefits

The project will have the following benefits:

  • Based on the predictions and recommendations, a comprehensive environmental management plan would be framed which would aid in the overall conservation, protection and management of the natural environment of Gulf of Kutch

Deliverables

  • A quantitative emission inventory i.e. load based discharge for wastewater, air and hazardous solid waste.

  • This study will lead to systematic assessment of the potential environmental effects including cumulative effects of strategic initiatives, policies, plans or projects for a particular region.

  • A baseline document on concentration of various pollutants, and their dynamics on spatial-temporal scale.

  • Predicting future growth and assessing the extent of infrastructural development (industrial, port and other such activities) the region can support based on the load based discharge and pollutant concentration which does not adversely affect the natural resource base and existing ecosystem of the region.

  • Furnish conclusions, predictions and recommendations based on the results and aid in development of an Environmental Management Plan.
